Holiday Inn Chennai OMR IT Expressway recently organized an event to revive the lost art of family picnics and we were invited too. We went to the hotel, packed our picnic bags and headed to the Semmozhi Poonga near Gemini, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. There we not only ate our food as a family, but we also played many games to rediscover the joy of family bonding. Here are the video highlights from the event,
Nowadays we go on vacations, but we tend to go to far away places and even far away countries. Wonder why we don’t pack lunch and go to nearby parks, beaches, Temples, etc. any longer. I remember going to Short Family Vacations more often when I was younger. These are important, especially for kids, who develop interpersonal and other skills while going out and playing with family members.
So when we were invited to this “Rediscover the lost art of Family Picnics” event by Holiday Inn (IHG Group of Hotels) we readily consented. When we reached the hotel we were given a short brief about the event and were guided on how to best pack the picnic boxes with delicious food and drinks. We then took a group photo and hopped on to a bus which was ready to take us to Semmozhi Poonga, a lush green park right in the heart of Chennai city. While in the bus we played Antakshari, the popular singing game which, for me, brought back a lot of memories.
When we reached the park we wasted no time in unpacking our boxes, sitting on the grass and eating most of the food we brought with us. After that, we played a number of games. We were expecting the kids in the group to be excited but were surprised to see elders equally enthusiastic as well 🙂 Finally, we were given ‘participatory certificates’ and we left with the promise of organizing more such local picnics with families, and especially kids.
Don’t forget to watch the above-embedded video summary to catch a glimpse of our activities on that day.
